At sixteen, Al Greene formed another group, the Creations, with high school friends Palmer James, Curtis Rogers and Gene Mason. James and Rogers founded a record company, Hot Line Music Journal, and the group, re-named Al Greene & the Soulmates, recorded a single ‘Back Up Train’ (15,) that reached No.5 on the national Soul charts (in Britain it was issued on the Stateside label).

Dec 11,  · By , the group had been renamed Al Greene & the Soul Mates. That was the group that recorded “Back Up Train,” and released it on the Hot Line Music Journal Label. They released an album with the same name but it didn’t do much business, nor did a couple of subsequent singles.
